The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) is down 21.1 points today (11 September), to 8,809.30 points as at 10.30am AEST, following the news of Anglo American (LSE:AAL) and Teck Resources’ (TSX:TECK.A) merger.
The companies will create a new entity, Anglo Teck, valued at more than US$50 billion, as reported by Mining.com.au.
The broader bourse is mixed with nine sectors performing lower this morning. Materials is one sector that has risen, increasing 0.18% this morning.
Asian markets are expected to open higher today.
The Dow Jones decreased 0.5% to finish the trading day, down 220 points to close at 45,491 points.
Earlier, markets in Europe had weaker sessions as London’s FTSE fell and Germany’s DAX declined.
The Australian dollar is up, buying at US$0.66.
Gold is trading at US$3,644 ($5,509) per ounce with copper trading at US$4.54 per pound.
WTI Crude oil is selling for US$63.74 per barrel while Brent oil is higher at US$67.55 per barrel.
Iron ore is on the decrease, valued at US$105.80.
The S&P/ASX200 is Australia’s leading share market index and contains the top 200 ASX-listed companies in terms of market capitalisation, and accounts for about 80% of the country’s equity market.
The index is designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalisation.
It is recognised as the institutional investable benchmark in the country.
