Archer SET for achieving spin state readout

Archer Materials (ASX:AXE) is pursuing multiple methods for the spin state of electrons to be read out electronically, using quantum single electron transistor (SET) devices and electrical detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) processes.

Qubit operation requires control of electron spins – this is done by microwave pulses. These spins then need to be read out shortly after.

Ahead of achieving a spin state readout, Archer says the SET device will isolate a single electron in the qubit. 

Archer is focused on operating SET devices in magnetic fields for demonstration that electronic readouts are achievable. Testing is expected to be complete by the end of 2025. 

The company has shown electrical gating through its SET devices, which boost the 12CQ’s readout capabilities, furthering the output of quantum information available.

Archer’s 12CQ chip is a carbon-based quantum chip that intends to open a new pathway for smaller, more cost-effective quantum devices that are operable at higher temperatures.

Archer collected electrical measurements under a number of temperatures to characterise multiple SET devices, gain insight to the manufacturing of devices, confirm reproducible device behaviour, and understand quantum properties.

CEO Simon Ruffell says achieving readout and control is a key milestone for the qubit demonstration, which will push the company to build a full quantum chip. 

“Showing electrical gating within our quantum single SET devices, helps us improve readout capabilities,” Ruffell says.

“We’re developing the qubit technology on carbon nano onions and films. Although this work was done on our nano onions, it derisks the film material technology.

“By using carbon film materials, we can bolster the manufacturability our quantum technology, as films allow for better integration with conventional chip making processes.”

Archer is a quantum technology company that is focused on the semiconductor industry, developing devices including chips relevant to quantum computing, sensing, and medical diagnostics.
