The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) has highlighted the South Australian Labor Government’s re-election this past weekend as an opportunity for ‘long-awaited’ reforms that are needed for the state’s exploration and mining sector.
AMEC notes that the election results provide certainty for the industry as well as a clear mandate to progress key commitments such as amendments to the Mining Act and the reinstatement of the Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) program.
CEO Warren Pearce has congratulated the South Australian Labor Government on their win.
“It now provides a springboard to process their commitment to the Mining Act Amendments and deliver the $12 million PACE initiative over four years,” Pearce says.
“The Premier and Treasurer have made clear, unequivocal commitments to work with industry on all 10 recommendations in our Election Policy Platform. Industry now expects this momentum to translate into action.”
AMEC says that the reappointment of the Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP as Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Mining provides the industry with important continuity for the sector.
Both the Treasurer and the Premier are committed to progressing AMEC’s Election Policy Platform, outlined in December 2025 and focused on long-term sustainable benefits to the industry and South Australian communities.
The PACE initiative is considered critical in driving new mineral discoveries and supporting long-term growth.
AMEC notes that despite the strong government support, the passage of key legislative reforms concerning the industry depend on the cooperation of the Legislative Council, which remains a key barrier to amendments in the Mining Act.
AMEC will continue to engage with Members of Parliament to ensure that reforms are prioritised moving forward.
