AEGIS collaborates to advance hybrid nuclear energy systems

AEGIS Critical Energy Defence (CSE:QESS) has executed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malahat Energy Systems and Ontario Tech University to collaborate on advancing hybrid nuclear energy systems.

Hybrid nuclear energy systems provide an innovative pathway, merging consistent nuclear output with agile battery energy storage systems and intelligent control to create dispatchable, high-performance solutions.

The initiative leverages AEGIS’ expertise in deploying rugged, secure energy systems alongside Malahat’s applied engineering strengths and Ontario Tech’s nuclear research capabilities. The MoU aims to unlock new opportunities for small modular reactor (SMR) adoption in high-growth sectors.

Under the MoU, the companies will model SMR and micro modular reactor (MMR) electrical characteristics and system dynamics, design and evaluate hybrid configurations for microgrid and infrastructure applications, and develop cyber-secure energy management systems.

The companies will also integrate simulations incorporating digital twins and optimisation techniques, progress hardware-in-the-loop testing and controller validation, and identify potential demonstration opportunities and external funding sources.

AEGIS director of innovation and technology Ramtin Rasoulinezhad says the collaboration is about unlocking nuclear power for applications where it has historically been impractical.

“By integrating SMRs and MMRs with Aegis’ advanced battery systems and secure controls, we are creating a new class of dispatchable, mission-ready energy infrastructure,” Rasoulinezhad says.

Grant applications are actively underway to support priority research, validation, and potential patent-generating activities, with any resulting funding subject to separate agreements and all required institutional approvals.

AEGIS Critical Energy Defence develops and integrates advanced battery energy storage systems for defence, critical infrastructure, industrial, and artificial intelligence data centre applications.
