US, Canada lead March private equity deals

Six of the top 10 global private equity and venture capital deals in March 2025 were in the US and Canada in a month which surged to the highest monthly transaction value in at least a decade.

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence data, the March deal value totalled US$141.93 billion across 952 deals – more than triple the US$42.03 billion ($65.27 billion) amassed from 883 deals amassed in February and barely surpassing the previous high of US$141.79 billion recorded in June 2021.

The largest private equity deal in March was Sycamore Partners Management LP’s proposed acquisition of multinational retail pharmacy chain Walgreens Boots Alliance for US$44.34 billion.

S&P Global reports quarterly deal value rocketed some 66.7% to US$221 billion from the US$132.55 billion generated in Q1 2024, despite deal count being down to 3,002 from 3,185 in the same period in 2024.

The technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector led global private equity and venture capital deals in March with 314 deals accounting for US$66.27 billion, followed by the consumer sector with US$46.46 billion across 77 transactions.

However, the materials sector, as well as energy and utilities barely registered any contribution to the aggregate transaction value, according to S&P Global.
