South Star completes successful life cycle testing with graphite battery materials

South Star Battery Metals Corp. (TSXV: STS) has announced that it has successfully completed initial life cycle testing of anode material produced from its Santa Cruz Graphite Project in Brazil.

The coated spherical purified graphite was tested across several CR2016 LiB coin cells, and displayed no noticeable degradation over 35 charging + discharging cycles, totalling 700 hours.

Santa Cruz gears up for commercial production in 2022

The Santa Cruz Graphite Project, situated in Southern Bahia, Brazil, is the first in a series of planned South Star battery metal projects, with Phase 1 commercial production slated for Q4 2022.

Large-scale pilot plant testing has already been completed at the project, fed by shallow graphite mineralisation from friable materials.

Phase 2 operations will include a larger concentration plant with planned production of between 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes per year of concentrate, with the ability to expand based on market demand.

The company has plans to produce samples of a range of value-add products for testing, including micronised & purified graphite, expanded & expandable graphite, plus coated and uncoated SPG.

“We are pleased to continue announcing robust battery testing results and advancing to production in 2022”

    Management comments

South Star President and CEO Richard Pearce said: “We are pleased to continue announcing robust battery testing results and advancing to production in 2022. We have produced several types of battery-grade spherical, purified graphites (SPG) with ultra-high purity of 99.99w% Cg and excellent workability with average particle sizes ranging from 8 to 23 microns.”
