Pilbara Ports breaks import-export records

Western Australia’s Pilbara Ports recorded 775.5 million tonnes of exports and imports through the 2024-25 financial year, breaking the previous year’s record for a sixth consecutive year.

In dollar terms, the value of tonnage that has travelled through the ports of Ashburton, Dampier, Varanus Island, and Port Hedland, totals around $153 billion.

The Port of Port Hedland saw a 1% increase to the previous year, with a throughput of 577.7 million tonnes.

Iron ore exports jumped by 3% to a total of 730.8 million tonnes across Pilbara Ports, which handles around 81% of the country’s trade and 43% of global trade.

Ports Minister Stephen Dawson says the Pilbara region is an “economic powerhouse” for the greater country, with recent demand pushing Australia’s iron ore trade.

“Despite the challenging global economic environment, it is great to see the team at Pilbara Ports deliver a sixth consecutive year of record-breaking throughput and solidify itself as one of Australia’s most valuable ports,” Dawson says.

With support from the Western Australian Government, the Lumsden Point Project recently completed a key causeway and four land allocation agreements with two wharfs to be ready for operation by late 2026, as reported by Mining.com.au.

“These infrastructure projects not only benefit our national economy but also generate local jobs in the region to support a future made in WA,” Dawson adds.
