Lithium Universe advances studies for Québec lithium refinery

Lithium Universe (ASX:LU7) is progressing the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for its Bécancour Lithium Refinery and has released a 3D model of the refinery’s design.

The company says the preliminary 3D model and plot plan layout have been developed to provide a comprehensive visual and spatial understanding of the proposed refinery’s design.

The design considered safety standards and best practices, effective process flow, material compatibility and adequate spacing required for plant operation.

Hatch is undertaking an engineering study for the design of a multi-purpose battery grade lithium carbonate refinery, which will form part of Lithium Universe’s proposed vertically integrated mine to battery grade lithium carbonate processing hub in Québec.

Lithium Universe is now focusing on sourcing major equipment from the same suppliers used for the Jiangsu lithium carbonate plant.

At the time it was completed, the 17,000-tonne-per-annum plant was the world’s fourth largest producers of electric vehicle grade lithium carbonate, according to Hatch. The plant was sold to Sichuan Tianqi Lithium, China’s largest lithium chemicals producer, for an 80% premium on construction costs.

Lithium Universe is fast tracking its DFS by leveraging the insights and proven technology from the Jiangsu plant, which Hatch also designed.

Meanwhile, infrastructure development and utility connections at the site are underway, addressing essential elements such as water supply, power, and transportation links needed for the refinery’s operations.

Material take-offs are also being performed to prepare a detailed capital expenditure estimate.

Lithium Universe will be presenting on the second day of the Vertical Events 2024 Gold Coast Investment Showcase, being held on 19 and 20 June at the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa in Queensland.
