Invinity Energy sells battery system to US steel mill

Invinity Energy Systems (LSE:IES) is selling a 32 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery system to US steel fabricator Pacific Steel Group for installation at the Mojave Micro Mill Project in California, US.

This marks the first new steel mill to be built in California in 50 years.

Collocated with a 40MW photovoltaic array, Invinity’s battery will be used to supply on-demand, low-carbon, locally generated solar power to the mill. The mill will recycle approximately 454,000 tonnes of scrap metal per year to produce sustainable, seismic-grade steel rebar for the US construction industry.

Invinity’s vanadium flow batteries were selected for the project due to their technical, operational, and safety characteristics, particularly their ability to cycle heavily to match the energy-intensive power requirements for the mill.

Project construction began at Mojave in June 2025. The mill is expected to begin operations in H2 2027.

Delivery of the batteries, which Invinity plans to manufacture in the US, is expected to start in Q1 2027.

Building a cleaner steel industry

Invinity President Matt Harper says Pacific Steel’s mission is to prove an innovative path towards a cleaner steel industry.

“We believe this project will prove that Invinity’s products are second to none in making that mission a reality,” Harper says.

Pacific Steel Vice President of mill operations Mark Olson says the company has integrated renewable energy generation and advanced battery storage into the project’s design.

“Following a thorough evaluation process and support from the California Energy Commission, we are proud to partner with Invinity Energy Systems on this transformative project, which represents a significant step forward for both California’s manufacturing sector and its clean energy future,” Olson says.

Invinity Energy Systems is a manufacturer of vanadium flow batteries for energy storage with operations in the US, UK, and Canada.
