Ghana gold exports rise amid curbing illicit trade

Ghana Gold Board purchased and exported US$4 billion ($6.13 billion) worth of gold from the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector between February and May 2025.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion 2025 Summit last week, Managing Director Sammy Gyamfi says gold purchasing and exportation was made through a newly established company, aimed at curbing illicit gold trading in Ghana.

Ghana Gold Board is the sole authority with exclusive right to buy, sell, weigh, grade, assay, value and export gold and other precious metals in Ghana.

Gyamfi says gold exports from ASM players exceeded exports from the large-scale sector for the first time.

“Total gold exported from the ASM sector between February and May reached a new record of 41 tonnes,” he says.

“The data shows the potential of the ASM if properly annexed.”

Gyamfi adds that the milestone has increased foreign currency contributed by the sector for the government with in May 2025 alone the sector produced and exported 11 tonnes of golf worth up to US$1.172 billion in export revenue.

According to Trading Economics, gold prices had steadied around US$3,310 ($5,079.63) per ounce yesterday (9 June), following a two-day decline as investors awaited the second round of US-China trade talks.

Gold’s price sat at US$3,325 per ounce at 8.30am AEST today (10 June).

The Ghana Gold Board reveals there are various upcoming initiatives aimed at empowering the ASM sector and its contribution to the gold sector expansion, while also addressing illicit mining.

These initiatives include launching an ASM skills training program in September this year, as well as investors in the Community Mining Scheme operated by the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.

Further, the Ghana Gold Board is launching an anti-smuggling taskforce to tackle illicit export of gold and a gold tokenisation facility to maximise traceability of Ghanaian resources.

In conjunction, the board plans to establish an international standardisation facility in Ghana by 2026. The facility will ensure responsible sourcing and sustainability across the entire gold value chain.
