FYI Resources recruits CTE to complete support work for proposed HPA production plant in WA

FYI Resources (ASX:FYI) has appointed Perth-based Control and Thermal Engineering (CTE) to conduct support work at its proposed high-purity alumina (HPA) production plant (SPP) in Kwinana, Western Australia.

The company reports CTE was selected because its ‘extensive’ experience and multi-disciplinary engineering and fabrication capabilities align with the specification requirements to design and construct the SPP.

This includes integrating ancillary HPA technologies and product finishing, which FYI has been developing and refining for inclusion in the HPA production process.

Now that CTE has been appointed, FYI reports it is formally starting the engineering study phase for the SPP. This study will use relevant outputs from previous work and will comprise a plant design along with capital and operating cost estimates for the project.

The company expects the study to be completed by Q2 2024, with design execution starting in Q3 2024. Further details about the engineering schedule will be released ‘shortly’ as the program is developed.

Commenting on the appointment of CTE, FYI Resources Managing Director Roland Hill says: “Appointing CTE as our engineering services provider is a significant step in the development of our small-scale HPA production plant project under the revised and optimised development plan.

Selecting CTE will provide us with excellent engineering capabilities…”

A considerable amount of thought and work has gone into the planning and scheduling of the SSP and the requirement for the facility to meet FYI’s future commercialisation and HPA product marketing objectives.

Selecting CTE will provide us with excellent engineering capabilities and a focused service approach to deliver innovative solutions for a high-quality project outcome for the SPP.”

FYI is developing its HPA project under a re-engineered and optimised development strategy after a collaboration with US-based aluminium producer Alcoa (NYSE:AA) concluded in February 2023. The revised engineering scope will see FYI develop the 1,000-tonne-per-annum SPP within the development schedule and to specific customer qualification requirements.

FYI Resources is a critical minerals developer focused on developing its HPA project in Kwinana, Western Australia for use in lithium-ion batteries, lighting, solar panels, and medical technology.

The company is also developing the Minhub third-party downstream heavy mineral sands and rare earth production facility in Darwin in collaboration with Arafura Rare Earths (ASX:ARU).

Control and Thermal Engineering is a Perth-based engineering solutions provider that specialises in pilot plant construction, in-house fabrication, welding, steel construction, fitting and turning, and pipe and tube fabrication.

FYI had $9.169 million cash at hand on 31 March 2023, according to its latest quarterly report published on 27 April 2023.
