Fortescue (ASX:FMG) has launched a Formula E racing team through Fortescue Zero. The company says the initiative will support technology development for mining and other industries.
The company announced on 18 September that it has acquired the Penske Formula E operation. The team says it plans to enter the Formula E World Championship for the 2026–27 season, subject to organiser and governing body approvals.
It will compete using a Jaguar GEN4 powertrain. Jaguar is part of Jaguar Land Rover, owned by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (NSE:TMPV). Fortescue says the team would be the championship’s first Australian-owned entrant.
Fortescue Zero Electromobility CTO Travis Hester says racing provides an environment to develop and test battery, software, and hardware technology, with potential applications across the group’s mining and energy operations and its automotive and defence customers.
Growth and Energy CEO Gus Pichot says the initiative extends Fortescue Zero’s existing motorsport engineering activities.
“We’re here to race, to win, and to innovate,” Pichot says.
Fortescue Zero already supplies technology to Formula E and maintains a technical partnership with Jaguar’s racing team. It provided the championship’s PIT BOOST charging system during the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons.
Fortescue says motorsport-derived power systems, fast chargers, and battery technology support emissions reductions at its Pilbara mines, alongside its planned solar, wind, and battery-powered Green Grid, targeted for completion in 2028.
Fortescue is an Australian iron ore producer with integrated mining, rail, and port operations in Western Australia, alongside energy and technology businesses.
