Encounter Resources (ASX:ENR) has begun a strategic review of its copper portfolio aimed at unlocking greater value and accelerating key projects.
The company’s projects span Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The review follows reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the Yeneena Copper Project in the Paterson Province of eastern part of WA, which extended shallow copper oxide mineralisation along the 8km-long Parbo copper system.
Executive Chairman Will Robinson says the review aims to bring the company’s copper portfolio back into focus while Encounter continues additional drilling, niobium resource growth, and other development work.
“This portfolio contains shallow high-grade copper JORC resources, high-grade copper intersections ready for follow up, and a pipeline of large-scale copper projects in the most prospective geological provinces in Australia,” Robinson says.
“Against a backdrop of growing demand for new copper supply, a quality copper exploration portfolio in a Tier 1 jurisdiction, with the potential for scale, such as that assembled by Encounter is increasingly scarce. The strategic review will assess alternative corporate structures and new partnerships that could better realise the value of this portfolio and accelerate its advancement.”
Copper project pipeline: Assets under review
The Yeneena Copper Project’s Parbo copper system hosts a near-surface, ‘high-grade’ inferred mineral resource estimate at the Tyrell prospect of 2.9 million tonnes (Mt) @ 0.79% copper (Cu), including 1.1Mt @ 1.27% Cu.
Encounter identified the Parbo system in 2010. The subsequent broad-spaced drilling was completed by Antofagasta (LSE:ANTO) and then IGO (ASX:IGO) as earn-in partners, which highlighted intersections of ‘high-grade’ copper sulphide mineralisation.
Encounter returned to the project in 2025, prioritising the Tyrell, Maitland, Griffin, and Armstrong targets with RC and diamond drilling.
The company notes the extensive shallow copper oxide across Parbo presents an opportunity for further resource growth while providing a focus to test for ‘high-grade’ copper sulphide mineralisation.
Meanwhile, the Lamil Copper-Gold Project spans 61km2 and lies around 25km from the Telfer copper-gold mine, owned by Greatland Gold (ASX:GGP).
Encounter has completed exploration work across several prospects, with previous drilling returning ‘high-grade’ copper at the Dune and Elsa prospects. Results include 1.5m @ 19.1% Cu from 409.1m and 0.3m @ 3.8% Cu, and 21.5 grams per tonne gold from 175.2m.
The Ward Copper Project covers 1,870km2 and lies around 250km northeast of Meekatharra. A review of historic hydrocarbon exploration drill core and seismic sections prompted Encounter to apply for exploration licences for the area.
Encounter notes that Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) and Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK) have also applied for exploration licences in the area, indicating growing regional interest.
Encounter’s Sandover Project lies around 170km north of Alice Springs. Exploration has focused on the western area of the project, where gravity and magnetic surveys have defined structural targets.
Encounter has scheduled a NT Geological Survey co-funded passive seismic survey for October 2026 to help define drill targets across the project.
The company also hosts several early-stage copper projects in the NT, including Maryfield and Broadmere. An RC and diamond drill program is also underway at the Jessica Copper Project, which forms part of a $15 million farm-in agreement with South32 (ASX:S32).
Encounter’s strategic review reflects its intention to crystalise value from a copper portfolio spanning Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
By considering alternative corporate structures and potential partnerships, the company aims to accelerate project pipeline and sharpen investor focus on its Australian copper assets.
Encounter Resources is primarily focused on advancing the Aileron Niobium Project in the West Arunta province of Western Australia.
