Cobalt Blue reports key commissioning milestones at Broken Hill Demonstration Plant

Cobalt Blue (ASX: COB) is powering ahead with work on its new Demonstration Plant following the completion of a number of critical work items at the Broken Hill Cobalt Project.

The mine’s box cut has been excavated, and the development of the decline is well underway. The decline will be roughly 80m long and will contact the ore body around 40m below the surface.

A total of 160m of development is expected to be undertaken in order to achieve tonnage targets. Ore extraction will commence soon, followed by crushing, milling, and concentration processes.

The construction and installation of critical equipment at the Pyrite Hill site is proceeding as planned. General site amenities have been developed to support long-term on-site activities, while milling and concentrator equipment commissioning in Broken Hill is nearing completion.

The gravity concentrator circuit, including gravity spirals, has been installed at Pyrite Hill in preparation for ore processing to begin. The multi-stage crushing plant is expected to be operational in May.

In Broken Hill, the leach facility was expanded in Q1, increasing throughput capacity from 40 kg/hr to 125 kg/hr. The oxygen and nitrogen plants, as well as the new large-scale kiln and sulphur recovery equipment, are presently being installed for discrete unit operations.

Speaking on the progress update, Cobalt Blue Chief Executive Officer Joe Kaderavek said: “Demonstration Plant construction is progressing strongly, with mining/concentration operations to begin shortly.

“We anticipate the Demonstration Plant will deliver over 3,000kgs of cobalt products from June – November 2022”

We anticipate the Demonstration Plant will deliver over 3,000kgs of cobalt products from June – November 2022. In parallel, we have received better than expected demand for larger scale samples globally.”

The Demonstration Plant is designed to operate in two stages. At the Pyrite Hill location, mined ore will be crushed, processed, and treated to produce a cobalt-pyrite concentrate.

Following this, the concentrate will be transported to the Broken Hill Demonstration Plant for cobalt extraction and recovery as Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate and/or cobalt sulphate.

To sustain the Demonstration Plant’s continuous operation for 20 weeks, 3,500–4,000 tonnes of ore are expected be extracted at Pyrite Hill.

The Broken Hill Cobalt Project is located approximately 25km west of its namesake town in far western New South Wales, and covers a total land area of 37km² with a broader tenement holding of almost 220km².

The deposits within the project extend over 5km of strike and vary between 10-300m of thickness, hosting a global Mineral Resource Estimate of 118Mt @ 859ppm cobalt-equivalent, 687ppm cobalt, 7.6% sulphur and 133ppm nickel for 81.1kt contained cobalt.

Cobalt Blue remains focused on maximising payable cobalt whilst also participating in the strong growth of the lithium-ion battery market.

The company reports that it is moving forward on meetings with key battery and electric vehicle manufacturers in the United States, Korea, and European Union.
