Balkan Mining and Minerals employs Ombabika to head inaugural Gorge drill program

Lithium explorer Balkan Mining and Minerals (ASX:BMM) is set to begin its inaugural drilling program at its Gorge Lithium Project in Ontario following the appointment of Ombabika Group as its drilling contractor.

Balkan, which has a $13.43 million market capitalisation, says this appointment comes in conjunction with its final planning and mobilisation activities, with project management to be completed by consulting firm Pleson Geoscience.

Balkan reports drill planning will incorporate data collated from mapping and sampling to test demonstrated ‘high-grade’ mineralisation at surface.

The drilling is being designed to build on previous exploration results, including 1.8m @ 3.75% lithium oxide (Li2O) from channel sampling and 6.8% Li2O from surface rock chip sampling.

Drilling is also expected to focus on testing identified ‘high-grade’ dyke targets at both the Koshman and Nelson areas, as well as test both extensions at depth and along strike.

Balkan announces drilling will then be stepped out to test the presence of spodumene pegmatites at depth across 2.6km of identified prospective trend strike uncovered from the company’s most recent round of soil sampling.

This announcement comes less than a week after the company reported it had received an exploration permit from the Ontario Ministry of Mines in order for Balkan to undertake site works for the planned maiden drilling program.

Speaking on the appointment of the drilling contractor, Balkan Mining and Minerals Managing Director Ross Cotton says: “The appointment of the Ombabika Group further strengthens our relationship with our earn-in partner and is an important step forward for BMM as we move ahead with our exploration efforts.

The Ombabika Group are highly experienced and bring a wealth of local knowledge of the Gorge Project together with the wider Thunder Bay district, having worked with Ultra Lithium on its Georgia Lake and Forgan Lake projects.

The appointment of the Ombabika Group further strengthens our relationship with our earn-in partner and is an important step forward for BMM”

Being armed with local experience and the data obtained from the company’s mapping, channelling and soil sampling programs, we are well positioned as we move into final planning for our inaugural drilling campaign in Ontario.”

Balkan Mining and Minerals is an ASX-listed explorer focused on the exploration of ‘highly prospective’ lithium projects across Europe and Canada.

The company’s Gorge project is located about 215km northeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and about 60km southwest of the township of Geraldton in Canada. The project comprises 11 multi-cell and one single mining claim, covering an area of about 43km-square.

Balkan Mining and Minerals had $2.121 million cash at hand as of 30 June 2023, according to its latest quarterly report.
