Surbiton Associates reports Australia’s gold mine production totalled 77 tonnes in the December quarter of 2025.
Among the operations producing more gold in Q4 2025 than in the previous quarter were AngloGold’s (NYSE:AU) and Regis Resources’ (ASX:RRL) Tropicana Mine, up 28,600 ounces and Newmont’s (ASX:NEM) Tanami operations, up 23,000 ounces.
The largest by-product gold producer was BHP’s (ASX:BHP) Olympic Dam operation in South Australia, which increased by 11,000 ounces in Q4 2025. Olympic Dam’s gold output totalled 216,000 ounces for the full calendar year.
Surbiton Director Sandra Close says Australia’s gold output for Q4 2025 is a six tonne increase in comparison to the 2024 calendar year.
“Output for the full 2025 year is worth $71 billion at the latest gold price, so gold is now definitely one of Australia’s largest single exports,” Close says.
At the time of writing, gold’s price sat at US$5,088.9 ($7,225.54) per ounce. Over the past month, the precious metal’s price has risen 1.95% and is up 70.56% compared to the same period last year.
Close says the December quarter 2025 was one of the most “memorable” ever for gold, given the price rises seen in just a three-month period.
“The price averaged US$4,145 per troy ounce and peaked at a then record high of US$4,549 per ounce in late December,” she says.
“A significant portion of the swings and increases in the gold price over the last several months has been caused by US President Trump’s on-again-off-again tariffs and policies.”
“In addition, conflict in the Middle East and the war which has now developed between the US and Israel versus Iran, have added to the uncertainty.”
On the demand front, exchange traded funds, central banks and individual investors in China and Asia remain strong, prompting some of the major US banks to upgrade their predictions for gold prices in 2026.
“On the local scene, the gold industry is showing no signs of slowing down,” Close notes.
“Exploration companies seeking further funds for drilling seem to have little trouble raising money and companies seeking much larger amounts for new treatment plants or expansions to existing facilities, are also well supported.”
Recently, Arete Capital Partners acquired Tasmanian Gold, the owner of the historical Beaconsfield gold mine in Tasmania. Arete already operates the Stawell gold mine in Victoria, with Beaconsfield planned to return to production by the end of 2026.
