Agnico Eagle builds scale in Finland’s gold belt

Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX:AEM | NYSE:AEM) has announced a plan to complete a broad consolidation of properties in Finland’s Central Lapland Greenstone Belt (CLGB), as the company enters into three separate definitive acquisition agreements, consolidating the region as a multi-asset regional platform for the company’s portfolio.

The CLGB plan follows Agnico’s strategy of regional consolidation in premier mining jurisdictions, with the new acquisitions bridging Agnico’s total regional land package to 2,492km2.

The transactions under consideration include the acquisition of all issued and outstanding shares of Rupert Resources (TSX:RUP.TO | OTCQX:RUPRF), the acquisition of all issued and outstanding shares of Aurion Resources (TSX-V:AU | OTCQX:AIRRF), and the acquisition of a 70% interest in Fingold Ventures, held by Aurion and B2Gold (TSX:BTO | NYSE:BTG), which would provide Agnico with 100% ownership interest in the Fingold Joint Venture.

Agnico has already held the long-life Kittilä mine — the largest primary gold mine in Europe with 3.3 million ounces of gold in probable reserves (24.8 million tonnes @ 4.17 grams per tonne gold).

Production at Kittilä was achieved in 2009, with the mine expanding to a 2-million-tonne-per-annum operation in 2020. In 2025, Kittilä produced 217,379 ounces of gold.

Acquisition projects

Adding to its Finland platform, the latest acquisitions have added Rupert’s Ikkari gold project, just 50km from Kittilä. Ikkari is an advanced exploration and development project with 3.5 million ounces of gold in probable mineral reserves (52 million tonnes @ 2.1g/t gold).

Agnico notes that Ikkari offers significant potential and exploration upside across its 1,254km2 land package, which also includes areas prospective for critical minerals.

The acquisition of Aurion provides Agnico with about 761km2 within the CLGB, including the JV land with B2Gold.

Agnico has highlighted multiple discoveries in the land package, including Kaasresselka, Helmi, Kutuvuoma, and Vuoma, providing them with additional exploration upside.

Agnico’s regional strategy

The acquisitions are expected to enhance the scale, growth, and longevity of Agnico’s Finland platform, which the company is advancing as a “world-class, multi-decade gold production hub”, with the potential to produce about 500,000 ounces annually.

CEO Ammar Al-Joundi says that these acquisitions build on Agnico’s long-standing strategy and experience in Finland.

“By consolidating the highly prospective and underexplored Central Lapland Greenstone Belt, we are bringing together our long-life Kittilä mine, the Ikkari gold project, unconstrained by property boundaries, and a district-scale land position with clearly defined targets across all stages of exploration,” Al-Joundi says.

Agnico’s Executive Vice President Exploration Guy Gosselin also said that the company has consolidated a large regional land package in “the most prospective exploration belt in the Nordic region”.

“This district hosts multiple high-quality gold opportunities, ranging from near deposit resource growth to largely untested regional targets, as well as highly prospective copper-nickel-platinum group elements deposits,” Gosselin says.

“The scale of the mineralised trends combined with the elimination of property boundaries provide a strong foundation for disciplined, multi-year exploration aimed at expanding resources and delivering new discoveries.”

Agnico has outlined an initial three-year exploration plan for the CLGB, targeting the Ikkari-Helmi gap area which offers potential for mineral resource growth and improved flexibility for infrastructure positioning.

Other targets include the broader Ikkari trend, a 15km-long Kaaresselka-Vuoma trend on Aurion’s Risti property, the Fingold JV property, and Rupert’s Area 51 target.

Agnico Eagle is Canada’s largest mining company and second-largest gold producer globally, with a focus on mines in Canada, Australia, Finland, and Mexico.

While Agnico Eagle is building scale through consolidation across the CLGP, Latitude 66 (ASX:LAT) is carving out its own footprint in Finland, not far off from these existing large-scale deposits.

Latitude 66’s position

Latitude 66 is advancing the Kuusamo Schist Belt (KSB) Project and the Peräpohja Schist Belt (PSB) projects in northern Finland across more underexplored greenstone belts.

The KSB Project hosts an existing gold and cobalt JORC mineral resource of 7.3 million tonnes @ 2.7g/t gold for 650,000 ounces and 0.08% cobalt for 5,840 tonnes.

The company completed a Scoping Study in March 2025 confirming the project as a “highly economic standalone gold-cobalt development opportunity” with additional potential for expansion.

Latitude 66 holds a land package of around 1,000km2 in Finland with this project. The company is also conducting additional regional exploration at the PSB project, which consists of one exploration licence, two exploration licence applications, and a reservation licence within northern Finland.

The PSB project is adjacent to the Goldsky Resources (TSX-V:GSKR | OTCQX:GSKRF | FNSE:GSKR SDB) (formerly Mawson and First Nordic) Rajapalot project, which has published resources of 9.78 million tonnes @ 2.8g/t gold.

Finland continues to emerge as one of the world’s most prospective gold regions, with long-life production assets combined with emerging discoveries across multiple mineralised trends.
